Gili Lankanfushi is an environmentally friendly resort in the Maldives with a ‘no news, no shoes’ approach to barefoot luxury, occupying a small coral island with sophisticated accommodation and facilities. We were blown away by the attention to detail at this one-of-a-kind Maldivian retreat.

Rustic yet luxurious secluded villas

All of the spacious suites and villas at Gili Lankanfushi are set on stilts over the lagoon, with some only reached by boat to afford guests the maximum privacy. Accommodations are constructed in natural materials such as timber and thatch and are so beautifully crafted that they enhance the natural beauty of their surroundings. Picture yourself in one of the open-air living areas opening onto a deck with hammocks and seating, surrounded by shallow crystal clear water, or perhaps lounging on the rooftop terrace, which offers an additional space in which to relax with stunning, panoramic views.

Cuisine at Gili Lankanfushi is exceptional, ranging from European-Maldivian fusion dishes to the finest, hand-rolled sushi. The nightly theme nights in the main restaurant ensure that guests are blown away by the culinary experiences on offer. The resort uses ingredients grown in their organic garden wherever possible, and the rustic setting of the restaurants and bars is certainly in keeping with the island’s authentic ambience. Guests can also choose from breath-taking destination dining options, or join the sommelier in the underground cellar for wine, cheese and chocolate tastings.

Our opinion

The rustic yet elegant villas at Gili Lankanfushi offer a perfect blend of sustainability and barefoot luxury. This resort offers a true Robinson Crusoe experience, and the Residences in particular are perfect if you are looking for seclusion and escapism. This place really is something special.

Offering utmost privacy and sophistication, Gili Lankanfushi complements the natural beauty of Maldives with 45 sustainably and exquisitely designed over-water villas. Each villa is built to be environmentally friendly, and features a private water garden, king sized beds, Wi-Fi, mini bar & Nespresso machine, mini wine chiller, TV, on demand movie listing, air conditioning and fans, in-room safe, 24 hour butler service, an over-water sundeck with catamaran nets, sun loungers, day beds and direct ocean access, rooftop terrace with dining facilities and a partially open-air bathroom with infinity tub and glass walled shower area. Guests also have use of bamboo bicycles during their stay.

The Private Reserve

Gili’s most exclusive villa and the world’ largest standalone over-water villa, reached by boat from the main island
Sprawling over multiple levels, this villa features two ensuite king bedroom suites connected via a jetty and two smaller bedrooms upstairs
Additional features include an open-plan living area with direct access to a sea garden, infinity pool, spacious sundecks, a couple’s spa pavilion with sauna and steam room, air-conditioned gym, a cinema, bar and a waterslide into the lagoon

Location: Gili Lankanfushi is located North Male Atoll, approximately 15 minutes from Male by speedboat

Children: Children are welcome year round at Gili Lankanfushi however as all accommodation is over-water, this property is not suitable for children under the age of six

By the Sea serves Japanese fusion cuisine overlooking the ocean and is open for dinner (plus lunch once per week). Fini Foni serves homemade ice creams and light lunches in a poolside setting. Overwater Bar is the perfect spot to enjoy a cocktail, but is also a grill restaurant open for lunch and dinner. Underground Wine Cellar is an exclusive venue for wine, cheese and chocolate tastings, as well as food and wine pairings hand selected by the island sommeliers.
